'Twin Peaks' star hits financial valley

Hollywood actress and Detroit native Sherilyn Fenn owes $176,593 in state and federal taxes since 2006, according to public records.

Fenn rose to prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s, appearing in the bawdy teen romp "Just One of the Guys," the quirky TV hit "Twin Peaks," and as the armless and legless star of the film "Boxing Helena." She has colorful connections to other prominent Detroiters, too. Her aunt is rocker Suzi Quatro, who played Leather Tuscadero on TV's "Happy Days," and her father Leo Fenn worked as the manager for musician and Detroit native Alice Cooper.

After several hits, Fenn's career cooled. In recent years, she's appeared in TV shows such as "The Dukes of Hazzard: The Beginning" and "House M.D.," and will star as an assistant district attorney next year in the film "The Scenesters," about crime-scene videographers tracking a serial killer.

Fenn, 43, who has dated a string of stars including singer Prince and actor Johnny Depp, has struggled for years to pay state and federal taxes, according to U.S. District Court records. She filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2003, listing $101,532 in state and federal taxes owed from 2001-02, according to this public record.

What's owed:

  • The IRS filed a $10,864 lien against Fenn for unpaid income taxes on Sept. 24 in Los Angeles County.
  • The IRS filed a $161,122 lien against Fenn for unpaid income taxes on Aug. 29 in LA County.
  • The state of California filed a $4,607 lien against Fenn on Aug. 24, 2006, in LA County.

Her side:

Fenn could not be reached for comment. Her agent and management company did not return phone messages seeking comment.

Why we focus on unpaid taxes

Every year, about $345 billion in federal taxes are either late or unpaid, according to the IRS, ripping open holes in budgets and shortchanging schools and public safety. That forces taxpayers to cough up more than their fair share, tax experts say. About $2.5 billion went uncollected in Michigan between 2000 and 2006.

Liens are filed when taxpayers ignore government pleas for payment. Tax liens are like tar. They stick to everything - homes, cars and income. According to the IRS, liens give the government a legal claim to a person's or company's property. Liens serve as security or payment for the tax debt and a red flag to creditors.

There are a variety of reasons people don't pay. Some can't afford to and some refuse while others miscalculate or receive bad advice. Unpaid taxes can lead to prison - just ask actor Wesley Snipes.

This blog will focus on state and federal liens and identify those who don't pay income, business and property taxes. We will gather our information from public records, interviews and Detroit News archives.
