Posted by Libby Spencer on Thu, Aug 20, 2009 at 8:04 PMAnd now, a word from our alumni
Former DetNews blogger Kevin McKague left us some time ago, but he's still writing and his local paper just published his letter to the editor on health care reform. He's more optimistic than most. Read it all at the link, but here's his closer.
There will be a health care reform bill passed into law this year. Come mid-term elections next year, more Americans will have health care coverage as a direct result of this law, and most Americans are going to remember which party they have to thank for that.
Former long time commenter Kathy is also still writing. She left us when she started her own blog, Stone Soup and now contributes to another alumnus' website, Blogging for Michigan, where she tells us about a coalition of interfaith religious groups who are backing reform. Faithful America is organizing Christians, Muslims, and Jews to contact Congress in support of universal health care.
Conspicuously missing from the coalition is the religious right. Apparently the "pro-lifers" want to save the lives of unborn babies by requiring that they be brought to term, but aren't that concerned about whether their mothers have access to affordable medical care so they can be born healthy.

Blast from the past
Kevin quote:"Congratulations, folks, you're officially Republicans now!"
You know Kevin, I was keeping an open mind about you until that quote. I was even beginning to feel you may have been correct in your discussion with ConPat.
Quite frankly, you just demonstrated to me how small-minded you are. It's mindsets such as yours that have stifled meaningful discussion of problems and held MI in her 10-year recession...
Jitz source:"Councilman Kevin McKague said city staff should remove Mississippi's flag (which contains the Confederate battle flag) because it is associated with racism and was used by the Ku Klux Klan."
http://thedavisonindex.com/davison/news/year-in-review-part-2.shtml
Jitz quote:Hmmmm, Where else can we ban history Kev?"
OUCH! Facts are a difficult thing for our buddy Kevin. Maybe he's the real "CON" on the board. How does it feel to look THIS stupid?
Kevin quote: "Got a lot of hate mail from the KKK down south for it too. I fought the good fight and lost, but I wouldn't do it differently if given the chance."
So we're supposed to admire you for "courage" after you got shot-down while pandering for political gain years ago and now lie about it?
Oh yeah... You're my HERO...
Kevin quote: "What else you got?"
In case you hadn't noticed, your argument is on the ground bleeding to death and you look pretty dumb right now. You may want to pick up the pieces before asking us to really come after you...
Kevin quote:"Are you guys beginning to feel that you're grasping at straws? You're making my point again.
What point? You're just digging the hole deeper for yourself...
Kevin quote:"...I would suggest you first paste your comments to a Word document and proof it before hitting "post"."
I would suggest you do the same, only with your facts...
Kevin quote:"Yes, Mako, "The Dukes of Hazard" had a car with a Confederate traitor emblem on it too. I noticed though that in the critically acclaimed cinimatic re-creation, the flag was missing."
The movie had a car in it? I was too busy watching Jessica in her red bikini...
Sushi didn't mention the Confederate Flag. I wonder why Kevin brings it back up? Maybe he's running for re-election...
And by the way, it's spelled "cinematic". What was that you were saying about spellcheck? "Stupid is as stupid does." Sorry, wrong movie...
Kevin quote:"Now if you'll excuse me, I have real life, non-internet based politics to effect, out there with the real people..."
Yep, probably got that truckload of industrial machinery to deliver south of the border. Don't forget to bring that load of illegals back on your return trip some Obama can insure them and they can vote for your re-election...
10-4 big trucker...
Chris, This is something like the sixth time in as many days I've had to fix your tags so I can read the comments under yours. If you can't take the time to doublecheck your posts, maybe you can just skip the html? L
Blast from the past
One other thing Kevin...
When are you going to try to ban the Christian Cross? It was used by the KKK too.
BTW...I think you fit right in with the "progressives". And that is no compliment.
Blast from the past
Kevin.... ever hear the word "obfuscation"?
I specifically asked you if you tried to have the American flag banned in Davison and you said you hadn't. But you knew darn well you tried to have an American state flag banned and didn't mention it. If had said "AN American flag" would you have admitted it?
I tried to get the truth directly from the source by asking you a question!
What do I get?
"Obfuscation is the concealment of intended meaning in communication, making communication confusing, intentionally ambiguous, and more difficult to interpret."
CONGRATS! You are a true liberal manipulating the facts to further your un-American agenda!
Blast from the past
Now if you'll excuse me, I have real life, non-internet based politics to effect, out there with the real people who also take stands without the benefit of silly pseudonyms.
Thanks for the plug, Libby! Keep up the good fight!
Blast from the past
"What else you got" is a common phrase in informal slang vernacular, and if you're going to lead your protest with a complaint about my "writing skills", then I would suggest you first paste your comments to a Word document and proof it before hitting "post".
I mention this because the rest of your post seems to be written by an angry hand, and is difficult to comprehend as a result.
Besides that, you're still grasping at straws.
Yes, Mako, "The Dukes of Hazard" had a car with a Confederate traitor emblem on it too. I noticed though that in the critically acclaimed cinimatic re-creation, the flag was missing.
Blast from the past
I liked the Dukes of Hazzard. It was a good show. It had a Dodge Charger in it. C'mon folks, this is silly. Mako out.
Blast from the past
"What else you got..."
Writing skills? What else I have is that, who are you to take down any remnant of our history? Would you feel the same way appeasing radical evangelicals and tearing down rainbow flags from 1976?
My point with Byrd is lets use your same litmus test. BTW, your literary wizardy is amazing. The "flag" I referenced was symbolic to the white sheets KKKers wore, like Sen. Byrd (I think you should forget a job judging "writers"). It's extremely relevant.
My point is that you along with many of your liberal cohorts pick and choose what to censor, takedown, expel.
Isn't there a "McKague" in D.C. that doesn't want something that was a symbol of racism, present today taken down, especially in the halls of the Senate? Who decides that? What makes you the history Czar as to what is and isn't offensive in Davison?
Unless you are Sandy Berger, why would anyone takedown archival history good or bad?
With regards to your health care Fantasia. Can you please opine on Jennifer Granholm cutting "public health care for the uninsured" in the here and now? Let's just take present day "health care reform" events and not the Obama messiahnic ones?
Hey Kev, "Medicaid" is today's very public, health care. Doesn't seem very "optimistic." Look forward to your comments and possible op-ed.
Blast from the past
Jitz, I am not familiar with your reference to Sen. Byrd wrapping himself in a flag, and to be honest, I don't really think it is relevant.
Now, if Sen. Byrd had been standing on City Hall grounds and done something while I was on the council, I probably would have had something to say about it.
Are you guys beginning to feel that you're grasping at straws? You're making my point again. You're slinging mud (and not even doing that well) instead of talking about health care, which is, btw, what the post is about.
Conspicuously missing...
Jitz said "Much like the First Amendment folks at these townhalls, he was muffled."
How in the heck are the town hall people being muffled? Are you referring to those in the media and elsewhere who are fact-checking their statements? That isn't "muffling" free speech, it's a debate.
Also, it's important to note that The Detroit News has rights too, and those rights include the right to establish editorial standards on a board which it owns. Personally, I would have axed J.D. long ago for his lack of writing skills, but then again, that's just me.
Editing a board, blog, or discussion board by the board owners for what could be considered "family unfriendly" language is a right too.
Blast from the past
Yep. That was me. Got a lot of hate mail from the KKK down south for it too. I fought the good fight and lost, but I wouldn't do it differently if given the chance. What else you got?
Of course, it is nice that somebody bothered to actually do some research before talking about me though.
Conspicuously missing...
Chris D, you are spot-on.
He was banned for the first sentence of his last blog:
"Liberals and their [slang for nocturnal emissions] of healthcare reform..."
JD Andary has worked in healthcare (calling on physicians, hospitals and operating rooms) for over a decade.
Consider him a casualty in the "healthcare debate."
Much like the First Amendment folks at these townhalls, he was muffled.
Good to see Libby is still aboard. Can't have enough NC law office admins blogging.
Since "tort reform" is NOT part of the healthcare debate, her voice is assured to be heard.
Blast from the past
Ahem...A blast from the past (chuckle) if you will...
From The Davison Index Year in Review:
Councilman Kevin McKague said city staff should remove Mississippi's flag (which contains the Confederate battle flag) because it is associated with racism and was used by the Ku Klux Klan."
Congratulations folks (and "Con Pat"), you're officially "informed" now!
Hmmmm, Where else can we ban history Kev? How about banning ranking Democrat Senator Robert Byrd? Considering he was draped in an "all white" flag (...associated with racism and was used by the Ku Klux Klan) and is a current Senator?
[;>) Chris D ]
Blast from the past
Well it sounds like you're begining to see my point then.
The other "con" here probably knew darn well that what he was saying about me was incorrect, yet since he knew my real name, was able to smear my reputation. It's a lot easier than arguing facts, and ironically, it's the kind of stupid smear campaigns I was complaining about in the letter Libby links to.
So we've come full circle.
I complain about smear campaigns from Republicans who are trying to change the subject, and the trolls at the Det.News blogs combat my complaints with smears.
Congratulations, folks, you're officially Republicans now!
Blast from the past
Hey Kevin, I was in North Korea once but not to deliver a birthday cake. Who told you that? I need to give his/her name to NCIS.
And why would you want or need my name? There is only one reason... to intimidate me. Do you plan on sending some Teamsters goons over? I crossed a UAW picket line once, they came for a visit that night at about 3:00am. They didn't scare me and neither do you.
Blast from the past
Hey "Con", is it true that once tried to go to North Korea to deliver Kim Jong Il a birthday cake? I heard something like that somewhere from some anonymous guy on the web.
Now replace "Con" with your actual name, and then tell me if yours was a legitimate question.
