Now I've heard it all. The Republicans are saying they would have loved to pass a bill but Namcy Pelosi hurt their widdle feelings with a partisan speech so they had to vote against it? Are these people adults or five year olds? That's the lamest excuse I've ever heard. I mean read the whole speech for yourself. I think this is the most partisan thing Pelosi said and it's true.
"It is a number that is staggering, but tells us only the costs of the Bush Administration's failed economic policies--policies built on budgetary recklessness, on an anything goes mentality, with no regulation, no supervision, and no discipline in the system."
She also said this, which sounds like she was giving them credit to me.
"It is a crisis that never had to happen. It is now the duty of every Member of this body to recognize that the failure to act responsibly, with full protections for the American taxpayer, would compound the damage already done to the financial security of millions of American families.
Over the past several days, we have worked with our Republican colleagues to fashion an alternative to the original plan of the Bush Administration."
The bottom line here is those who voted against this bill were the ones whose constituents were flooding their offices with complaints that they were bailing out billionaires instead of helping out the working class. It's as simple as that. Everybody wanted to bail out Wall St but they want to be reelected more so they wanted someone else to vote for it, just in case it doesn't work. And as I've said I thought it was pretty lousy bill that wasn't going to solve anything anyway. But rejecting it because of a speech is much more partisan than the speech Pelosi gave and I say that as someone who is totally disgusted with Pelosi for what I believe was a cave-in to the White House. She gave away way too much ground to them.
Part of me is glad it happened. Now we get to see whether the White House was just fear mongering or if for once, there really was something to fear. One thing for sure, both sides are disgusting for worrying about who gets the credit for the bailout instead of focusing on the best solution possible. So far that hasn't happened on either side that I can see.

The Economy
Forgot that Bush used that theme a bit in 2000.All I know is that there is plenty of blame to go around on both sides of the coin, but I do believe the dem's deserve a majority of the blame for this financial meltdown. One thing I wonder about the Housing problems and all the foreclosures is How many of these can be tied into illegal aliens residing in the USA and who were approved for these no documentation and no credit check type loans and who now cannot pay.I bet there are quite a few.

The current President ran as a "uniter" back in 2000
My assumption of who you were referring to was incorrect
The Economy
Tray,
That's what I thought you meant as well. Though I may disagree about blaming Obama (since the House GOP was really the strength of opposition, and McCain just made it a mess), the Senate version tomorrow should look much more appealing, and highlight the real points of legislation, not for Wall Street tantrums, but for even-handed Main Street thinking. Don't forget the 2.5 page memo, however, and the Bush Administration's fail of fails in trying to really put together a cohesive, intelligent discourse. "Give us $700 Billion, raise the public debt $3.1 TRILLION, and no law can affect us, and no judge can interfere." That Lame Duck hath rabies. Mako out.
The Economy
I was actually talking about Obama a.k.a. The Great one,the Uniter of all people,he who will reach out across all lines and Nation's and bring us all together and make everything ok.He could not even deliver his own party and they are the majority.Try reading it again and get back with me.

This may come as a surprise to you, but the 'dems have the majority in the House of representatives, not the GOP

The Economy
I've spent almost the entire day at the dentist so I'm begging off on getting into the weeds here today but jwh, the reason the Congress is off for two days is because it's Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year and apparently a lot of the legislators and experts are Jewish. It's not that they don't want to do something. It's just that these are the High Holy Days. It would be like expecting the Congress to work on Easter.
The Economy
This is exactly why our country is failing at this crisis horribly....
Instead of placing ALL blame on the House and the Senate for the mess that we are in. We are still just pointing fingers at a specific party. While we watch them on T.V. pointing fingers and playing the blame game.
Oh yeah if the House and the Senate really cared then they would be back today trying to work things out instead of waiting till Thursday.
Wake up people this isn't the time to just blame the Democrats or just blame the Republicans. Blame them both for their incompetence
The Economy
And where was the Great Uniter yesterday for this bailout vote? You know the one who would reach out to all Americans, bring us all together and lead us in a new direction. The man can't even deliver his own party and they are the majority if they could just stand together and they can't even do that. And pelosi what a foolish old woman she is suppose to be the leader of the house not just the dumbocrats.

Couple of points.. First the GOP was playing the same game your side did after the vote failed..blame the other side.
The real reason for the failure of this compromise bill was the feedback from the electorate at home. 133 GOP congresscritters amd 95 'dems told their respective leaderships "No Way"
IMO..It was a good thing they did so..but its going to be painful in the short term, but a better bill may come out of it
As far as Pelosi's comments..more than a few flat out lies. For example "with no regulation, no supervision, and no discipline in the system."
There is plenty of regulation in the banking system. Supervision? The SEC, FDIC, etc.... How about the congressional oversight committees. Who's party has run Congress for the past 2 years MS Spencer? Discipline..she's got that one about 1/2 right.
Interesting that when she claimed "he (Bush)inherited President Clinton's surpluses -- four years in a row, budget surpluses," That she failed to neglect that Bush also inherited Clinton's recession. I'm sure its just a oversight on her part.(sarcasm)
In addition she "forgot" a promise she made before the 2006 elections(below)

"Relishing the prospects of a triumph, Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi yesterday promised to restore integrity and civility to the House if voters put her party in control this fall."
