Fugitive Deserves Hard Time

Right on neoconssuck. They do. They are all for 'law and order' except when it comes to punishing the guiltiest of the guilty - about 95% of the current administration in Washington, D.C. Ole' Pete is a classic example of pointing the finger away from the one who should be taking responsibility for the druggie deal - his offspring. Think about it Petey.

Smokers Rights

Hye, Pete,

Last time I saw Marilyn was when we dined with another couple at Carl's Chop House. She was obnoxious and smoked throughout the entire meal -- even while she ate.

Now she's taking credit for and misquoting Ralph Kramden. The correct line is "I don't care if you burn." Sounds like she hasn't changed much!

Enough is Enough

Why do Detroiters keep electing people like King Kawame and Hizzonner Soulman Young? It truly baffles the imagination.

Pete, I used to absolutely relish your times at the Det News, during Soulman's "administration". Is it true you actually followed him to Jamaica?

Poetic Justice

My heart bleeds for Greektown Casino. Imagine that they consider bankruptcy! Think of all the lives shattered at casinos. I feel as sorry for them as I do the now, mostly very rich American Indians.

Quayle, Casinos, et al.

Mr. W.,

It sure is a pleasure to have you back writing regularly, at least where I do not have to search for it. I carried the News thirty years ago and caught he-- from my station manager for reading your column before I delivered my route. It was worth it.

Best,

Smoking Ban

I thought we lived in a "FREE COUNTRY", wrong!!! We are being dictated to again as we have been on other issues. What is our Milltary fighting for,to keep us a "FREE COUNTRY" to do as we are told to do by the lawmakers thats a FREE COUNTRY? Our economy is terrible now and this Smoking Ban will only make it worse this is a fact!!! How can the lawmakers pick and choose where smoking is allowed? Oh yah Casino's, Smoking Bars, ect. If this Smoking Ban passes as I read it this is totally discriminating. We have no more car industry here and there will be alot of business that will lose alot of money for our state,is this what Michigan really wants and needs? Respect the ones that smoke and Respect the ones that don't, thats fair to all.

Smokers Rights

Pete,

I have a response to you and your wife;

Put 100 people in a closed room for 1hour, all of them smoking.......1 hour later you open the door and they are all alive.

Put 100 non smokers in the same room with a 1 car running,

1hr later open the door....they are all dead.

I hope you leave your car window open all the time when its running....get it?

Smoking...and...consequences

Why should the Government tell ME that I can, or can't, associate with smokers? In my privatly OWNED Bar? In my privatly OWNED Resturant? In the privacy of my OWN home? Is the Government telling me that I DON'T OWN The property I have worked for? Is a Government telling me whom I can, or can't associate with ? Sounds like Nazi Germany to me Sir! Can the Government LEGALLY dictate my working enviromnent, or my customers' choices? Is'nt that a violation of the U.S. Constitution? Isn't that exactly what the Constitution says in "unwarrantable jurisdiction over us" ?.....YES it is !! The Government is telling me, a private citizen, that I have no control over my business environment, and my associations? Our forefathers fought so valantly for the individual and HIS right to choose. Yet little by little in the name of "the Public Good" those rights have been taken away by LIBERAL judges who rule from the bench. Mr. Waldmeir, my wife smokes..I DON'T. But that being the case, why should MY right of association be effected by HER right to choose to smoke? It shouldn't ! You Sir have NOT the guts to stand up for the freedom of association, and choice. You Sir stand for the right of the SOCIALIST "public good"! Are we a Constitutionally Limited REPUBLIC, or a Socialist leaning "good" nation to the world ? WHY?

Waldmeir & smokng

AS Waldmeir states no doubt smoking kills and people shouldn't smoke. however, autos kill, guns kill, overweight kills and many other things kill does that mean to Waldmeir that all these things should cease to be? We had or have, laws on the books force pubic places to ensure that they have areas set aside that is only for smokers and it seems to work very well so what is wrong with contining that system.

Waldmeir, and other ex-sokers, are willing to take away the rights, yes rights ,of 20% of Americans who do smoke. A right to use a heavy taxed legal product. These ex-smokers, and others, say nothing abut making the product illegal, nothing about removing the taxes, they speak only about how smoking is killing them.Whle I smoke cigars (one a day) and enjoy cigars and have done so for seven decades, starting when I was in service during WW 2. A war that was "supposed" toensue that we retaned the rights given our Constitution now Waldmeir, and the others, want to usurp that Contitution and make a waste of the time I, and millions of other spent to protect it. GIVE ME A BREAK. Frank Mannino

Waldmeirs column.

Hey Pete-must be nice to pontificate and take the high road. You ever been arrested for anything? Time for you to go back to the pasture and reflect on your own mistakes and life in the mirror.Give this woman community service for female addicts and convicted suppliers in her home town with court supervised probation. To separate her from her family does no good. What you want only punishes the innocent children she has had and raised.Community service she would be good at-she has been on both sides and turned her life around. And, like others have said-we are letting murders and rapists out due to over crowding. Get a grip Pete-you missed the boat on this one.

Pete Waldmeir

It is so great to read Pete waldmeir again and as usual almost always agree with him.

You still have the no nonsense, common sense approach to things and love your comments on the mess in Detroit.

How sad for those of us who were born in Detroit and love the city and now watch it being reduced to this pathetic place run by a moron and all of his other moronic friends.

I'm afraid this scandal has thrown it to the edge financially and morally and there seems little hope for it now. So many other large cities are doing so well and such fun to visit and Detroit should have been like that too.

Hard Time already served

Put the lady on probation and send her home. This is crazy. If she married, had kids and lived each day with this secret on her conscious, she has been punished enough. Isn't the reason for sending folks to jail, to punish them and hope they learn from their mistakes and don't do the crime again? I think this lady has learned her leason and I doubt very much she will repeat her crime. 32 years of her life has been affected already. I doubt it would serve the public or her any good to put her in jail and pay for housing her when our prisons are already overcrowded and we are letting rapists, murderers, and such out early to free up space. Get your head out of your rear and tell me exactly what sending her to jail would accomplish! Nothing, absolutely NOTHING! What a waste of tax payer money....!

Hard Time

Personally, Pete, I think you should have stayed retired. Absurd? Had it not been for the fact she, as a kid, got caught, the statue of limitations on her crime would have expired ... decades ago. And do you really think the seller of drugs is responsible for the use by other people. Had your kids elected to buy and use drugs it would have been their own fault. You sound like the same fools today who look to someone else to blame for their own bad decisions. What she did was wrong then, to be sure, but it is in no one's interest at this late juncture (except perhaps to satisfy your need for what, revenge?) for this woman to spend even one more day in jail, let alone the hard time in a dank prison you suggest. You lack both common sense and compassion.

Column idea

Another great column, Pete! Did you see the story in the Freep this morning about Kwami's relatives and friends on the payroll? Bet you can't let that go by without comment!

Fugitive Deserves Hard Time

Given Michigans prison budget issues, her behavior since her escape and the idiocy of the drug war let her off with a big fine, probation and maybe a year in a minimum security prison. It's asinine to put people in jail for 10-20 years for selling/using drugs while those convicted of manslaughter get far less. Alcohol and tobacco is legal, but pot isn't? We've wasted how many millions of dollars on this misguided war on drugs and for what? To what end? To punish people for their addictions? Absurd.
