Buy insurance or go to the gulag

How's this for a nifty little provision of the health care bill passed by the House last weekend: If you don't buy a government-mandated insurance policy, you could go to jail.

Rep. Dave Camp, R-Midland, is calling attention to the provision that calls for up to a five-year jail sentence and $15,000 fine for those who refuse to buy insurance.

Interviewed by ABC News, President Barack Obama didn't back away from the harsh penalty for noncompliance, but instead made the false comparison to mandatory auto insurance policies.

The obvious difference is that you don't have to buy auto insurance if you choose not to drive. There are no opt-outs in the health insurance bill.

There are no exceptions, even for those rich enough to pay for their own health care.

Says Camp: "This is the ultimate example of the Democrats' command-and-control style of governing -- buy what we tell you or go to jail."

Obama's health care reform is looking more and more like the product of a totalitarian regime.

Health or jail

You know what Nolan? Jail just might be a solid bit of retirement planning if the Democrats keep passing these 1000+ page bills.

Going to jail for my generation might be like ol' gramps heading to FLA to get a break from the winter.

Health or jail

Well I have healthinsurance with my auto insurance. Will I be forced to buy TWO>>>

Since in case of two insurance policy only" ONE" will pay me..BUT I CAN PAY FOR TWO policiy...but only collect from ONE????

Well with 47 million people not being able to buy healthinsurance ....WE NEED MORE JAILS...the good side..FREE MEDICALCARE..free sexchance..free college..HMMM what are they smoking in congress?

Nolan, you think that's bad, check this out!

Section 2531 of Obama's 2000 page health care 'reform' bill bribes States that repeal caps on medical malpractice awards (and the accompanying lawyers' fees!) by providing an "incentive payment." What does this have to do with providing better care, covering the uninsured, or eliminating waste? Nothing! It's a big wet sloppy kiss for one of the Democrats' key constituencies--trial lawyers.

Nolans health care comments are looking more and more like the product of a paranoid fear monger.

Rush is telling everyone that it is a $250,000 fine and 25 yrs. in prison!

Jonfarm,

I fail to see how the auto insurance example is not relevant. There are plenty of people who take buses or public transportation to work. Some of these people are even quite well off, but have access to subway, rail and bus systems in Chicago, NYC or Boston (for example). Even in Detroit, many people operate without a car. Do we force these people to buy auto insurance? No, because they don't drive and thus make the choice, either by lack of income or desire to save money, are not required to have car insurance.

On the other hand, residents of this country will now be required to have health insurance simply as a condition of being alive. There will be no ability to choose whether or not to be covered or to risk paying a lot of money by not having it. That being said, a healthy person who chooses not to have health insurance can save thousands of dollars in premiums by not having insurance. But this takes away that choice.

That's simply the distinction Finley was making and it is an important one that Obama is also missing.

Health Care

I would not label the administration as 'totalitarian', but I do disagree with much of what they are doing right now. This health care reform debate is out of control as well. It is pretty clear that many of the people pushing the health care bill are proponents of a single-payer system and think that a public option will take them there.

Some liberal pundits and politicians even slip up sometimes and admit it. I think many people will be very unhappy when their premiums go up, and we will be right back debating health care in a few years. Hopefully, Obama will eliminate the billions of waste, fraud and abuse he found in Medicare even if his health care bill doesn't pass.

Nolans health care comments are looking more and more like the product of a paranoid fear monger.

Though there may be an actual question for debate buried somewhere in this issue, Nolan sheds no light on it, and in fact pushes it deeper.

Instead, he refutes Obama's "false comparison to mandatory auto insurance policies," saying that everyone who chooses not to buy auto insurance need only quit driving.

Really, Nolan? You seriously put that out as an argument? Is your residence somewhere inside the Detroit News building? Do you push a wheelbarrow home from the grocery store?

It would be so exciting if these inflammatory commentaries were actually backed up by cogent arguments. Then maybe we could resolve these issues.

But unfortunately it's so much easier to merely tear down others' ideas, offering none of your own, and enjoy the social rewards of polarizing and frightening people.
