A request from Ernie Harwell's daughter

Ernie Harwell's cancer may be categorized as incurable, but his daughter isn't giving up hope.

Julie Harwell dropped a note this morning that said, "We still need your prayers for my Dad to be healed." It seemed like something I should pass along.

Ernie Harwell

Neal,

In response to Ernie's daughter's request for prayers, I want to tell her that I have been praying, and my prayers extend beyond the request for healing. I pray that Ernie and his family could know and understand the amount of healing that Ernie's voice and character have brought so many of us over the years. Ernie - Dad and husband, grandfather, I'm sure - was away from his family a lot during baseball season. That had to have been hard on the family and Ernie on many occasions. The rest of us, stretching from the far South to New York City (Sarah Jessica Parker grew up listening to Ernie) came to appreciate that you know its a strike "because the umpire said so." We were calmed on many an evening and afternoon by his wonderful voice, after a hard day of life's usual frustrations.

I pray that God - the ultimate umpire - will know the right time to call Ernie's game. Ernie's calm acceptance of his fate is another lesson to us all. We pray for, and we thank, gracious Ernie Harwell.
