Swing and ballroom dance at the Painted Lady and benefit FernCare

If you are looking for something different to do on Thanksgiving Eve besides the club or live music scene, check out the Painted Lady Lounge in Hamtramck (formerly Lili's 21). The laid-back punk rock bar will host a fundraising event for FernCare, a free medical clinic for uninsured people that is set to open soon in Ferndale.

The fundraiser features swing and ballroom dancing lessons from 9-10 p.m., followed by a dance party. The bar will also raffle off gift certificates and work by local artists. Retro and vintage attire is encouraged.

Cover charge is a $5 donation to FernCare. The Painted Lady, located at 2930 Jacob St. in Hamtramck is 21 and older. Call (313) 874-2991 for more information.

Rodriguez and other musicians to put on free show to help Donovan's Pub survive

Donovan's Pub at 3003 W. Vernor is a family-owned, friendly Detroit watering hole that has been hit by hard times in the recent years due to the Ambassador Gateway project. The construction of the project has made it hard for patrons to access the pub.

This Monday the bar will host a benefit show with performances by folk/rock songwriter Rodriguez, John Linardos of Motor City Brewing Works and songwriter Alison Lewis. The event is also a celebration of Dia de los Muertos, a Mexican-American celebration of family and friends who have died.

There is no cover, so use that savings to tip well and buy an extra round for friends. The music is set to start at 9:30 p.m. For more information call Donovan's Pub at (313) 964-2267.

Friends of Belle Isle Aquarium to hold fundraiser

I'm a huge fan of aquariums and I was very sad when the Belle Isle Aquarium was unjustly shut down a few years ago, just after its 100th birthday. Thanks go out to MotorCityBlog for drawing this event to my attention.

This Saturday the Belle Isle Aquarium will be open for a charity event to raise funds to restore and reopen the facility (and re-stock it with fish). The party includes live music, strolling dinner, a cash bar and a silent auction. Tickets are a modest $60, or $100 per couple. Visit www.belleisleaquarium.com for more information.
