Buju Banton concert cancelled after gay-rights group protests

Jamaican dance hall and reggae singer Buju Banton's concert scheduled for Wednesday at the Majestic Theatre has been cancelled.

According to Affirmations, a local community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people and their friends, Banton's songs have disturbing lyrics that promote violence toward gay men, specifically in his song "Boom Bye Bye." Due to the organized efforts of local LGBT community leaders, several of Buju Banton concerts around the country have also been cancelled.

After Affirmations sent out a call to action to ask people to contact Majestic Theatre owner Dave Zainea to cancel the show, Zainea sent out a release announcing the cancellation.

"This was an incredibly tough decision for us both philosophically and economically. If we had known that there was any controversy surrounding this artist, we would have never even considered booking him. We do not condone any form of hate speech," said Zainea in a press statement released Friday.

To help the Majestic Theatre and the Zainea family with the cancellation costs of the Banton concert (which were thousands of dollars), Affirmations and Transgender Detroit will host a LGBT awareness concert on Wednesday. Tickets cost $10 and all proceeds will go toward the venue as a thank you for cancelling the concert.

The Dead Weather to play special show Friday at Magic Stick

Tonight (Friday), Jack White's newest band the Dead Weather will perform at the Magic Stick, 4120 Woodward Ave. in Detroit. Doors open at 8 p.m. and tickets cost $20. There is no way to buy tickets in advance. It's just after noon and I bet there is already a line forming. If not, there will be one soon.

Besides White, the Dead Weather features Alison Mosshart of the kills, Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age and locally-based group the Waxwings, and Jack Lawrence of the Raconteurs. The band is coming through Detroit on their way to the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto. The Dead Weather will be back in Detroit on July 24 to play the Fillmore.

Third Supersuckers show added

The Supersuckers have added another date to their run at Corktown Tavern this week. They play tonight, Tuesday and now Wednesday as well.

One of the area's best metal bands (in my opinion), Chapstik, will open Wednesday show. Tickets cost $20. Read my previous blog for more ticket info. Tickets are still available for all three shows.

Check back tomorrow for a recap of tonight's show.

Spoke too soon on that one. Maybe there will be recap later in the week. I'll keep you posted.
