DETROIT -- I bet Kevin Smith never imagined that his first score today would be a safety. But when Matthew Stafford threw an interception to James Butler, who then turned into the end zone, Smith was there to tackle him and get the Lions on the board. The Ram's Josh Brown kicked a 41-yard field goal in the first quarter, which is how we arrived at the odd 3-2 score.

DETROIT -- This game was set up so the Lions could win. But they just couldn't handle the early success. They managed to shoot themselves in the foot two too many times and couldn't stop the Vikings when they gave them the short field. Again, it reminds me of the Lions-Vikings games of last year even though many of the names have been changed.

DETROIT -- The official attendance today is 56,269. So that means that 50,000-plus are going home disappointed. I really think the Lions could have had this game. But when you lose the turnover battle, you usually lose the game.

DETROIT -- Chad Greenway is clearly the player of the game. I mean, what play hasn't he made today? He just recovered the onside kick to complete his day. Now Tarvaris Jackson is at quarterback for Minnesota.

DETROIT -- OK, the Lions got a 48-yard field goal from Jason Hanson. But they're down 14 points with two and a half minutes to play. Get ready for the onside kick.

DETROIT -- Playing the role of Larry Caper ... Bryant Johnson. He was too open and Matthew Stafford overthrew him.

DETROIT -- I just don't know what to say at this point. It WAS a close game at the half. In fact, the Lions had the lead. But this second half has been an utter disaster. Between Kevin Smith's fumble and Matthew Stafford's interception, the Vikings have capitalized on those turnovers and have put the game out of reach with less than six minutes to play. It would be nice to think the Lions could come back from this but Stafford isn't Tom Brady yet.

DETROIT -- I can't believe what I just saw. And I mean that in the worst way. Chad Greenway has played great for the Vikings today, this time intercepting rookie Matthew Stafford and returning the ball 36 yards to the Detroit 16-yard line.

DETROIT -- I was wondering why the Lions would be running when they need to score twice to at least tie the game. Then Matthew Stafford threw a great pass to Calvin Johnson, who broke tackles for a 37-yard gain. But of course, there was a flag on Gosder Cherilus. Half the distance to the goal. Ugh.

DETROIT -- Sigh. The Lions really needed a big play on defense on that drive. I know the Vikings only scored a field goal, a 46-yarder at that, but it puts the Lions 10 points back. I just haven't seen any recent signs that they can make up that deficit, especially in less than 10 minutes. But maybe they'll show me something here. Hopefully so.
