Lions staying with WXYT as flagship station

The Lions have re-upped with WXYT-FM (97.1 The Ticket), agreeing to a three-year deal to keep the station as the team's flagship radio partner. In the final months of a five-year contract signed in 2004, the team had opened up negotiations this fall, with WRIF providing the chief competition, but a deal to stay put was finalized this past week. (Updated 5:20 p.m.) Lions president Tom Lewand was just on the Valenti & Foster show to make the announcement. And he didn't hide from the fact that the Lions and their flagship have had some issues -- about content, criticism and promotional efforts -- the last few years.

"Listen, you guys have been good partners, and I'm excited about the fact that we're gonna renew with you for three years," Lewand said. "And we're gonna take you from being good partners to being great partners, and that's not just you guys, but that's us. We're gonna play better football, and we're gonna make sure that you guys, as our flagship station, know what we're doing, when we're doing it, how we're doing it. And we can create the kind of partnership that we should've had in the past, and haven't quite, frankly. And hopefully going forward, we create the kind of relationship that makes all of us better in the process."
