Lions claim LB/DE Martin, release Fowler
With Darnell Bing out for an extended period with a shoulder injury, the Lions claimed LB/DE Orion Martin off waivers Tuesday, his agent, Brian Levy, confirmed. The 6-foot-2, 260-pound Martin, who was cut by the Miami Dolphins on Monday, is an undrafted rookie who played defensive end at Virginia Tech but was trying to make the Dolphins roster at inside linebacker,
Tp make room, the Lions released receiver Eric Fowler (Grand Valley State), who was a practice-squad player for the team last year.
Also, with Jason Hanson out after knee surgery and Swayze Waters missing practice with a hamstring problem today, the Lions are bringing in a few free agent kickers for workouts Wednesday. Among them is Nick Novak, a journeyman pro who played six games for Kansas City last season.
