Happy meal? Lions dine with Matt Stafford
This wasn't the Lions' Last Supper. It was their first, actually. And the guest of honor was quarterback Matthew Stafford on Thursday night at Shula's Steakhouse in downtown Indianapolis, where Lions officials spent nearly two hours with the potential No. 1 overall draft pick.
Coach Jim Schwartz and offensive coordinator Scott Linehan joined team president Tom Lewand, GM Martin Mayhew, senior personnel executive James "Shack" Harris and, yes, a 6' 2 7/8", 236-pound former Georgia Bulldog -- still wearing his combine workout shirt with his name "Stafford" on the back -- for what appeared to be a relaxed, enjoyable meal. (NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was seated a couple tables away, but he was just having dinner, not acting as a chaperone.)
There'll be more of these this weekend, most likely. And it'd be silly to read too much into it. But we'll get a chance tomorrow to ask both Mayhew, who's scheduled to meet with the Detroit media in the morning, and Stafford, who'll have his media session later in the day, about their dinner conversations.
