TV or not TV? Is Kramer in the Booth?
Erik Kramer, best known in Lions' lore as the quarterback of the 1991 team that beat Dallas in the divisional playoff, has been the color commentator in recent seasons for the Lions' exhibition game telecasts. The buzz in the electronic world is that Kramer might be heading to the booth in Chicago, instead of return to the Lions' games.
Here's the rub: earlier this week, the Lions completed negotations with the CBS affiliate in Metro Detroit on a three-year contract on their exhibition games. The situation has been somewhat dicey by the firing of Toby Cunningham, a respected, long-time executive and producer for Channel 50, one of the other CBS TV properties in town.
That left some folks involved in the telecast wondering what would happen to the broadcast crew. An opportunity arose for Kramer to do the games in Chicago, where he played when signing as a free agent in 1994. A booth in the hand is worth wondering what's going to happen elsewhere.
One can only assume that the Lions will see if Kramer has signed a contract in Chicago. If not, it's logical to assume that they will make a pitch to bring him back. For Kramer, it's great to be wanted.
