Iron Chef

I'm not on the Gleaners advisory board and I still think its a wonderful event. I look forward to it every year and 2009 is no different. Even if it wasn't for a great cause, this would still be a great event to attend because the atmosphere is nothing but fun!

Iron Chef

As usual, Kate is dead solid correct. Gleaners' Iron Chef event is an absolute hoot, and I say that even though I'm always too busy being a roving reporter to eat much. Granted, I'm on the Gleaners Community Food Bank advisory board, so I'm a wee bit biased. But we're talking great food, a great cause, a great atmosphere, and chocolate. What else could anyone need?

Just called your number and you stated you will be out of the office until July 6 and would not be able to respond to any of your calls. You sounded rude and curt. What kind of customer service is that? You should of said "I'm really sorry that I missed your call, I'll be away from my office until July 6. I'll be happy to get in contact with you then"It is pretty obvious that your nose is so stuck up it's probably flatten to your face. The following is a true story. Many years ago my boyfriend and I went to the Excalibur in Southfield. This was a beautiful place and quite expensive. A very famous Detroit News person was there. He was extremely drunk, rude and obnoxious. The server was not fast enough for him and he(the drunk) proceeded to purposely throw over the table while screaming obscenities at the server. He ruined a very romantic night for me and my boyfriend. And now everytime I see this person on TV now, I see this scene again. I thought he was a great newscaster until I witnessed this. You can be poor and have class, you can be rich and have no class. It fails to amaze me how some rich people feel their time is so much more valuable than someone else's and how this gives them a license to be rude and obnoxious. I just came across this article you wrote. Wow!!!! Do you have the same attitude when you go to the Sectary of State's for your auto plates? Probably not, since we are all programed to think the government moves slow. How about the bank? Many times I stood in line for over a half hour, only to see one of the tellers closing their window so they could go on break. Yet, we accept both of the above scenarios without some sort of an anger issue. Maybe the clerk had to go to the bathroom. Usually when you work in grocery, retail,or fast food even if you work 8 hours you do not get a break or lunch. Plus, the manager's don't provide a relief person. I think every one should have the opportunity to work in grocery, retail, and fast food and then they will have a deeper understanding about horrible working conditions, no benefits, and low wages. Maybe instead of going wacko to the manager about his employee you should of inquired if he allows his employees a break or lunch, so that they could go to the bathroom.

Strawberry Muffins

I made those Strawberry Muffins to share with my neighbors, one of whom is a retired home economics teacher. I was horrified at the result: muffins spreading all over the muffin pan.....I even made 14 instead of 12 because there seemed to be so much batter. And they were sunk and runny in the middle so I put them in for a few minutes longer. No one could figure out what happened! They looked like a mess, but they tasted delicious. Now I will have to make them again and show them the difference. Unfortunately, I had to make a different recipe for my Easter brunch.

Stroh's

My late father was in the beer business for many, many years and he always called Stroh's "river water".

Mr. Hiller

I recently saw Mr. Hiller in the store, helping with tidying up at a a food sample table during the store's "Michigan products" day. I have spoken to Mr. Hiller a couple of times during many years of shopping in one of his 2 stores close to our home, and he always strikes me as an inspired, sincere and humble man. The ban on tobacco products seems very much in keeping with Mr. Hiller's character. Jim Hiller is a good role model and shows how we can all be kind and helpful to our neighbors during difficult times.

Beer

I would rank Strohs at the bottom of that list. I have tried every beer on the list.

pisco sour

Here is a better recipe for your Pisco Sour.

2 oz Pisco

3/4 oz fresh lime juice

3/4 oz simple syrup

1 egg white

Dry shake the ingredients first to emulsify the egg whites. This will give you a better foam. Add ice and vigorously shake for 20 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Be sure to strain completely, as a good portion of the foam will cling around the ice in the tin. Dash Angostura bitters on top of foam. For a nice twist, if you have a Vermouth atomizer, put your bitters in that and flame the bitters on top of the foam by spritzing through a wooden match, it gives a great smokey flavor to the drink.

That recipe sounds real, real healthy! Bacon, cheddar cheese, heck let's just throw some mac & cheese and a slab of ribs on top of some fresh green beans and call it a Detroit thang. A brown paper bag could taste good with those ingredients.

It's a very good dish if prepared properly. This one is a miss. (P.S. fresh green beans are not the answer).

Green Electric savings device

I am blogging this information because I think everyone who owns a home or business should own this product. I purchased a green energy savings device which has saved me 11%-15% on a monthly basis for the past 4 months. This product is very cost efficient and it helped me and my neighbors to help our energy crisis. Find more information on there website www.power2savings.com.

Sidekick?

I don't have the whole 'outdoor kitchen' that you need for an outdoor oven, so when I heard about an 'oven' that I can put on my BBQ side burner I was ecstatic. Its called the Sidekick, but I can't find it anywhere, my friend is obsessed with BBQ blogs and heard about it on there. Has anyone heard anything? Where can I get more information?

filthy restaurant

I am writing to you because I am hoping you will look into this restaurant or direct me to the proper sources.

Pappas restaurant on Kelly @ McCormick in Detroit on the Harper Woods border is a filthy mess. The ceiling is covered with black soot and hanging black dust, there are broken tables, the window sills are covered with bugs and dirt, the bathroom is dirty (the walls, sink, toilet with no toilet paper) the windows are soiled and the cooler that holds juice, milk and other drinks is filthy from top to bottom. I don't know how many roaches are there but I only saw one. When I confronted the owner he was very indignant saying there is nothing he will do about it and he just had a health inspection 2 days ago. If Detroit health inspectors are giving a pass to this kind of restaurant then they need to be reported. This place is not only a health hazard it is a danger to our children and elderly who may have compromised immune systems.

Please help me have this place cleaned up.

Power failure food guidelnines

The info in your blog was most helpful. I find it ironic, though, that it appeared in an on line blog during a power failure.

I think that most people would have found the info more useful on Tuesday, in the actual paper, rather than on line on Friday. Those who needed it most would probably not have had the 'power' necessary to use their computer. Plus, by Friday, most food was probably already spoiled.

...just a thought ;-)

I'll print and file a hard copy of the info for future use.

Thank you!
