'Motown just can't seem to catch a break'
When the demise of a Women's National Basketball Association team takes on cosmic significance for the national press, it's another indication that Detroit is stuck in the national conscience too much.
So when the Detroit Shock announced that it is moving to Tulsa, Okla., the Wall Street Journal briefed the item in its sports section with the quip that "Motown just can't seem to catch a break."
Sure, the Shock won the WNBA title three times. I even attended a game of the first championship series against the L.A. Sparks. But, really, is this a body blow to Detroit's sporting public? After all, the team is moving because ticket sales are down.
What follows is the usual litany of despair rifled off by the Journal -- snakebit Tigers, woeful Lions, in-transition Pistons. Hey, what happened to mentioning the Stanley Cup-contending Red Wings? Ah, Detroit just can't seem to catch a break.
