'The State of Joblessness'
The Wall Street Journal editorial board hammers Michigan's state government and Gov. Jennifer Granholm in particular as it advises the 49 other states: "Steer clear of the Michigan model. The Wolverine state is once again set to run out of money, and it is once again poised to raise taxes even as jobs and businesses disappear."
The Journal makes legitimate points about how Granholm's tax increases have not dug Michigan out of its continuing deficit hole. And it notes that the state is on a collision course with another government shutdown on Nov. 1 as Granholm plays tax hike chicken with Senate Republicans.
The Journal is a little off on one of its facts. For example, Granholm, mostly Democrats and a handful of Republicans in 2007 approved an increase in the income tax from 3.9 percent to 4.35 percent -- not the 4.2 percent the Journal cites.
The Journal notes that Granholm is trying to break his pledge not to raise taxes. The Journal thinks state government should be cutting spending since revenues are shrinking.
Michigan takes another black eye as the Journal advises: "If any larger good can come of the experience, it is that Michigan is teaching other states how not to govern."
