Caught in Time
I think the first few years are the worst. You get the news, you do the treatments, you see a zillion dr's and BC never leaves your mind. And if you do happen to shove it to the background, then it is time for another checkup and Bam, it hits you again. I have to say it gets better with time! I am now a nine year survivor, and after a year of treatments, 3 years of Tamoxifen and 5 years of Aromasin, I am done with everything and have been released by my oncologist. In a way it seems weird to not be doing something to make sure the cancer does not return, but it is also great to know the odds are in my favor of it never returning. I think once you get done with the reconstruction, you will feel like you have moved on. Every step along the way moves you a little farther!
Good luck!

Fellow survivor
Hi Jodie, I was sent the address to your blog from my son. He is your brother's roommate and good friend! I am a 7 year BC survivor and reading your blog is like reliving my past! You are right on about the hair loss. I thought I was prepared to lose my hair, but 16 days after my first AC when it started falling out, it was devastating. It took a few days of shedding and going outside and shaking like a dog to convince me to shave it off. Once I had a good cry, I was fine with being bald. It certainly was easier getting ready in the morning, and you save money on shampoo, conditioner and haircuts! :-) I just wanted you to know that you can do this. I had 2 surgeries, a lumpectomy and 2/3 of the nodes removed, then when more cancer was found I had a mastectomy. So my scarlet letter is a 9" scar running across my chest and under my arm. But I wear it proudly, because I fought and won! I did 6 months of chemo (AC and Taxol) then 3 months of radiation to the chest wall. And 7 years later all my tests are still NED! (no evidence of disease) I am here for you if you ever want to talk or have any questions. My prayers are with you. Keep fighting the fight, you can win!!
