Doing business with City of Detroit companies

Hidden in the city of Detroit is one of the largest manufactures of Bollards and Bollard covers, they have created decorative, lighted, removable and standard applications. They have provide Stadiums, Convention Centers, Government Building, Hospital, etc with all their bollard cover needs. Another great place to see Ideal Shield's decorative covers is the Dequindre Cut in Detroit, http://www.detroitriverfront.org/dequindre/

Its important to help our neighbors by doing proper research into products and finding produced in Michigan products.

RE-USABLE SHOPPING BAGS

Every store has them. Re-usable shopping bags with the store logo on them. Sounds like a great idea, but has anyone ever checked the tag to see where these "green items" are made?? Well, every single one that I have checked out is MADE IN CHINA. The land of NO environmental laws, the land of NO human rights laws and the land of NO child labor laws. It's so easy to "be green" when the damage is being done in another country on the other side of the world. Can anyone say HYPOCRITICAL.

cycledcell

This company is a TOTAL scam. I followed the directions to the T - they received my phones and sent me an email that their "paypal was not working" and they would send a check. Over 70 days later and no check. I have sent 4 emails to them with none of them being responded to.

I would say that you should send your phone elsewhere. They may pledge to help the environment and pay you money, but they are only helping themselves.

Kids outdoors

Hi Leslie,

Great post! It's encouraging to see kids playing outdoors (rather than in front of their computers, texting, etc.) and doing positive things for our environment. I saw some children down the street from me playing outdoors the other day and thought about how nice that is too see, and how rare sometimes.

Thanks for your great postings!

Recycling bottle caps

Good program... but why can't we or why don't we plastic bottle caps?

Often they are made from Plastic #5 which is made from Polypropylene. This material has to be treated differently during melting but that does not mean they can not be recycled.

NPR did a small piece on this with Sierra magazine's Josie Garthwaite that explains this topic a bit more in depth.

Recycling in the workplace

If there are any companies that are thinking about initiating a recycling program at their facility. Have them ask for Julie at Midstates Recycling Services, part of the The Recycling Experts. The phone number is (800) 989-7036. We go to companies and help set-up programs to recycle paper, cardboard, plastic, metal, and electronics. We will then determine what the best plan of action is to implement a successful recycling program and collection for us to pick the materials up. We provide an Ecological Report to all of our clients that tells them how much material we collected from their facility and/or office that was recycled as well as a break down of the positive effects that it had on the environment.

Recycling Outside The Box

When I think of recycling I think of paper, plastic & glass. What about those products that have made homes for themselves in our basements & garages? They remain on a shelf or in a cabinet simply because we don't know how to dispose of them.

Every home I have purchased in my life has one thing in common. The left over paint from the previous homeowner. Paint is a major contributor to household hazardous waste. It contains VOC's and other contents that can adversely affect our environment. So what do you do with it?

Shelby Paint & Decorating will be holding, on April 25, 2009, the first paint recycling day ever. Typical hazardous waste disposal days will take latex paint and harden it so it can go into a landfill. Shelby Paint & Decorating is taking latex paint and turning it into usable plastic goods . The service is free and keeps your left over paint out of landfills. Check out paint 2 plastic at www.shelbypaint.com/blog or www.shelbypaint.com .

Threading in forums

We are working on adding threading to the forums. Clicking on the headline of a post will now get you related posts in a few different ways.

- If the post was sent to us in response to an article, clicking on that post's headline will retrieve all comments on that article, and clicking on the "See related article" link will send you to the article itself.

- If the comment was submitted in response to a cybersurvey, clicking on the headline will take you to the cybersurvey and its related comments.

- If you click on the headline of a forum post that was simply posted in the forum, you will get all posts with that same headline.

If you want to add a comment to a thread in the forum, use the same headline as the post to which you want to respond.

If you find a problem, please tell us, and thanks in advance for your patience as we work to improve the forums for you.
