Those kids today!

I was out jogging one evening this week, enjoying the beautiful weather and all the pretty trees and flowers in my neighborhood.

As I slowed to a walk to cool down, I passed a group of kids raking up grass clippings at the end of their driveway. They seemed to be having a ball, grappling with their unwieldy, too-tall rakes and creating a tidy pile of debris.

One of the boys was especially enthusiastic, sweeping up a storm -- and a dust cloud! A girl, who appeared to be the oldest among the crew, called out, "Stop doing that!" ... "Why?" the little boy asked. ... "Because it's bad for the environment," she said firmly. ... "Why?" he asked again. ... "Because you're getting dust in the air and people have to breathe it," she explained.

While a little bit of sidewalk dust isn't going to make or break global climate change, it was kind of cool to know that the next generation is thinking about the health of the planet -- and the people on it. And that might just make a HUGE difference!

Kids outdoors

Hi Leslie,

Great post! It's encouraging to see kids playing outdoors (rather than in front of their computers, texting, etc.) and doing positive things for our environment. I saw some children down the street from me playing outdoors the other day and thought about how nice that is too see, and how rare sometimes.

Thanks for your great postings!
