Wind turbine to be installed today at WSU

Franklin Wind Energy Group is installing what it touts as the first wind turbine in Detroit on Monday at Wayne State University. The turbine will power the Engineering Technology Building at 4855 4th Street.

"The unit is approximately 12 feet tall and will be mounted on a mast that will place the unit 30 feet into the air on top of the building. The VAWT can generate 5kW of electrical energy," said a statement released by Mark Layne Marketing & Public Relations. "The energy is stored in a unique battery system so that power can be utilized as needed. The VAWT can take wind from any direction, operates at low RPM with little vibration, and emits little noise."

A windmill rotating lazily in a tulip-dotted countryside or a passel of tall, metal structures spinning industriously in a lonesome desert are what often come to mind when you think about harnessing the wind to create energy, but wind turbines come in many forms.

Interest in wind energy is growing. The Detroit News recently reported that a wind turbine plant in Novi will hire 250 people and Delta College recently announced it will offer a degree in wind turbine technology.

So, stop by the WSU Engineering Technology Building and see what all the buzz is about!

VAWT??

Ahh a VAWT is a vertical axis wind turbine. I cant wait to go check this out! It would be great if the city looked at the land around city airport, as that would be a great place to have a wind farm in the city!
