Landscaping- What to do.
My wife and I are searching for individuals who can design a re-landscape of the front yard of our bungalow home in Livonia. The lot is only 40 feet wide and there are no trees on it. We want to reposition the walkway from the porch to the driveway (it goes to the sidewalk now).
We have lived here 27 years and since we are empty nesters now we would like to liven up the 'curb appeal'. We are not planning on moving anytime soon so this would be for our pleasure as well as preparing for resale. If anyone knows an individual who would speak with us about this please give them this e-mail address: FaithfulFred@yahoo.com
We live near Plymouth Road and Merriman Road in Livonia.
Thank You,
Dillon
cosmos
I received a packet of Cosmos a couple of weeks ago-
After seeing your success I'm going to make an effort to plant them for sure!
Morels
How lucky to find a morel in your own back yard! I hope you find even more next year :-)
Hardy mums? Ha!
Funny, I just read a story over the weekend about how mums are really not "hardy" anymore. They've been bred now for color and flower form. So they're just annuals that can take the cold. Bummer.
Hydrangeas
Last winter we went to Florida. Our hydrangea froze out for the first time and it had to be cut it to the ground. It is ten years old and has bloomed every year but never as profusely as this summer! The interesting part of it is that our hydrangea gets very little sun. It is located on the north side of our house at the east end of a staple-shaped pocket formed by our garage on the west and a porch on the east. Because the garage extends two feet north of our house, our hydrangea gets only late afternoon sun.
My favorite winter protection is a three foot wire cage lined with burlap and gradually stuffed to the top with pine needles which are gradually removed in spring. The advantage of the needles is that they do not pack down like leaves.
Our favorite blossoms are the ones my wife dries by hanging them upside down in our basement. Then she spray paints them and we enjoy them for years.
Thanks for your many wonderful columns!
Tomatillos
Dawn, I've never grown tomatillos before but was moved to this summer after reading your blogs. How do I know when it is time to pick them?! The green husks are throwing me off. :)
Tomatillos are ready when they fill the husk and the husk slightly splits at the bottom. They may be a light green or have a yellow tint; the size is the best indicator. Mine aren't ready yet, but I've heard from a number of people whose are, so it looks like an early harvest this year.
Summer planting
Jeff, I'm a little nervous about planting in the summer. How much water does a new shrub need?
Winning Flower gardens
The gardens were lovely and I get jealous sometimes when I think of the beautiful gardens I used to have. Now I have heart failure and unable to weed or hoe outdoors. But I still like looking at other peoples accomplishments.
Organica Plant Growth Activator
I live in the Brooklyn, MI area and am interested in purchasing some the the Growth Activator. Is there any store or garden center near Brooklyn or Jackson that sells it?
Herb garden
Dawn, you are quite the Martha Stewart! I am so impressed!
Jeff Ball-6/7/08 on Lawns
Can't you tell us the names of a few of those 'organic' fertilizers & the names of the 'good lawn' bacteria? Then how about a few places we might purchase them? And lastly, any idea where in the western Wayne County area we might purchase earthworm castings? Found them last year but can't this year.
