Advocacy for the disabled earns Oakland University student award

Micah Fialka-Feldman, a Huntington Woods student who has sued Oakland University for access to the dorms, was honored Oct. 3 by the Michigan Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild for his persistent struggle for people with disabilities.

Fialka-Feldman, who has a mild cognitive impairment that hinders his ability to read and write, sued the university in November, claiming the university violated federal law by refusing to let him live in the dorms.

The university argues Fialka-Feldman, 25, was denied housing because he's not in a degree-granting program, a requirement for dorm living. The suit is ongoing.

Fialka-Feldman was honored along with Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Deborah Thomas by the lawyers guild for campaigning for equal rights and access for all persons with disabilities.
