SHOPPING WITH DISABILITIES
Can someone tell me where they had there van's redone for wheelchair and hand controls done in Michigan? Hopefully in the Metro Detroit area. HOPEFULLY REALLY CHEAP TOO, I'M ON DISABILITY ALSO AND SOON GOING ON MEDICARE(JANUARY 2010)I'm very nervous about that, I have no idea what going on Medicare means to me and my situation, do they help any with paying on the van hand controls? Pipe dream right? It takes a lot of time but I can take my electric chair at home down my ramp to get into our minivan. But that's it, once in , I'm done, no way to get into my manual wheelchair. And I can't push my own wheelchair, I have Peripheral Neuropathy bad and my hands hurt too bad to use them any longer. So if I'm going to drive I need a lot of help. If anyone has any answer's please email me @ dsomer1958@hotmail.com, thank you, DAN1958.
SHOPPING WITH DISABILITIES
Neeru gave me pause to think about her experiences with shopping and errands.
I have to use a wheelchair too, and I too have a car with handcontrols. I pull my chair into and out of the passenger side (backseat) and I too, need to have a space wide enough to open my car door wide. (I have a two door car midsize)
The problem with handicapped marked spaces is simple. When I moved from Michigan a few months ago to Arizona. The problem remains the same. A lot of people have these placards/plates and stickers who really shouldn't be using the spaces. Unfortunately alot of these people are seniors.
Seniors, should walk more. Unless they use a walker, cane or chair. OK fine. The ones who could walk, do not. Shame on them. The dr's hand out these scrips way too much.
I find alot of these seniors also pull into a handicapped space and just sit and wait for the person they dropped off.
It drives me crazy. I have really no time sometimes to just drive around with my placard hanging from my mirror waiting for a space to open. There are times when I have "created" a space for myself, by taking up two spaces and park at a exagerated angle. Keeping my placard visible so that others would figure it out.
Seniors and I am one myself. Please, if you must drop off a loved one, fine. But please do not park in a handicapped space and wait. Drive around a bit. Go park in a regular space. Those that do have special tags and or plates. Rethink why you have it. It is not a privledge to HAVE ONE. It is a responsibility to use it wisely.
Too many times I had to compensate and use up two spaces when I shouldn't have had too.
