Monica Conyers was busy-busy on Thursday.
In the morning, her brother, Reggie Esters, 38, was sentenced to five years in prison for weapons felony charges after he brandished a shotgun last summer. Conyers had initially denied Esters was her brother when The Detroit News uncovered she helped him get a city job despite his lengthy criminal past. Then after Esters, who had been arrested 14 times since he was a teen-ager, was shipped off to prison, she taped "Let It Rip" on Fox 2, the City Hall Insider's new must-see TV.
In what's become the show's hallmark, a lot of folks argued, shouted over each other and pointed fingers before host Huel Perkins closed with a short speech that went something like this: "People! We're all in this together. Let's get along." Hey, it worked for Jerry Springer for years.
During the show, Conyers criticized Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson for being "somewhere in Florida just messing up time" when the Cobo Center deal fell apart. She later said she has tried to get her husband, U.S. Rep. John Conyers, to get funding from Congress. "I sent it to him too to get an earmark."
If you're wondering why the other mustachioed fellow, former radio host Jim Johnson, was so quiet in that clip, here's the first part of the show. If we've learned nothing from watching "Let It Rip," we've learned that suburbanites with strong opinions about Detroit can expect an earful -- at the very least.
