'Area fiber shops team up for Halloween Yarn Crawl'

Why not celebrate this Halloween with a bunch of yarn enthusiasts and lots of fun at one of five yarn shops participating in the 2009 Yarn Crawl set for October 24-25?

"Not only a great excuse to visit some of the best and most diverse shops in the area, it is also a wonderful opportunity to support First Step women's shelter, and to earn a chance to win a $200 gift certificate that can be used at any one or combination of crawl destinations.

The Crawl works like this: purchase your personal passport to a weekend of fun, fiber and prizes at any of the participating shops. The passport is just $20 per person with all proceeds donated to First Step, a shelter downriver that helps victims of domestic violence, including their children.

To be eligible for the gift certificate, have your passport signed at each shop that weekend and turn it in at the fifth. (The gift certificate expires on January 1, 2010 and can be used at any one or any combination of the participating shops.) It's a great way to help a great cause plus, you get...

A Yarn Crawler 'trick or treat' bag,

Lots of goodies at each stop to fill your bag!

A detailed map of how to find each shop.

Coupons from each shop for special offers between Halloween and Christmas. Offers will vary by shop and are for "Yarn Crawlers" only!

'Best of all,' says Larry Hart, general manager of Artisán Knitworks in Grosse Pointe Park, 'Yarn Crawling is a wonderful team activity. We urge everyone to pile into a car with some friends and enjoy! And Yarn Crawling can be a one- or two-day adventure!'

If you don't have a Yarn Crawl Buddy, explains Hart, each of the participating stores will be putting together car pools. Just ask when you register. Once you get started, there are only a few things to remember:

Take the Yarn Crawl map along.

Have the passport "endorsed" at every shop.

Turn in the passport at your final stop to be eligible for the grand prize.

Hart adds that the passport is valid only on October 24 and 25, 2009."

While the participating shops keep varied hours, every shop will be open at Saturday from 10-4 p.m. and noon-4 p.m. Sunday.

"For more information call: Artisán Knitworks in Grosse Pointe Park at (313) 823-4132 or any of the other participating shops which include: Knit A Round Yarn Shop (Ann Arbor, MI); The Wool & The Floss (Grosse Pointe); Neighborhood Knits (Dearborn) and Gail's Darn Yarn (Birmingham). Information by email may be obtained from artisanknitworks@sbcglobal.net."

Maggie Jackson will be at Artisan Knitworks Aug. 28-30

If you're lucky, you'll be among the 20 people learning to combine textured stitch patterns in one of two knitting classes with Maggie Jackson at Artisan Knitworks Aug. 28-30.

Jackson, the author of "Maggie's Ireland" from XRX Corporation, along with several other books on knitting, "is an internationally known knit designer who specializes in gorgeous textured garments and accessories, typically of linen and other crisp fibers, but also wool, mohair, and other wonderful materials," writes Sandra VanBurkleo, owner of Artisan Knitworks.

Jackson's three-day schedule at the fiber studio will be as follows:

"Friday night, from about 5:30 on, wine and cheese and a big fashion show -- over 40 garments, real women as models -- cost: $15.

"Saturday, workshop called "OH NO, NOT ANOTHER SCARF!", which is about Maggie's wonderful textured stitches, and how to create a simple garment out of almost any yarn in your stash -- and on

"Sunday, a workshop called "FROM IRELAND TO SPAIN," that takes the same textured stitches a step further into garment creation."

COST:

Fashion show and wine/cheese (Friday): $15

Workshops (Saturday and Sunday) $60 each, or both for $110.

All three events: $120.

For more information, call Artisan Knitworks at (313) 823-4132, or just stop by at their location: 15222-B East Jefferson Ave., Grosse Pointe Park.

(Remember, each class is limited to 20 knitters, who are "say advanced beginners." So don't hesitate to reserve a seat!)

Enter the 'Jelly Yarn' book giveaway

Now you can stretch your imagination while teaching kids how to knit and crochet with "jelly yarn" and the book titled "Jelly Yarn, 20 Cool Projects for Girls to Knit and Crochet" (Krause Publications/$19.99) by Kathleen Greco and Nick Greco.

From knitting and crocheting dog leashes and sports bottle slings to purses and belts, youngsters will love the hip and colorful creations they'll learn to make with your help and the book's easy-to-follow instructions. Best of all, everything made with jelly yarn is waterproof which explains the pattern for a snow globe flower! Now how cool is that?

"Jelly Yarn is a new, round and glossy yarn that's ideal for knitting or crocheting. It's made of 100 percent vinyl and comes in 14 yummy colors. The yarn is simple to work with because the stitches are easy to see, and they won't split like some fiber yarns," according to the book's introduction.

Hey, this sounds like the perfect material for knitting or crocheting a beach tote for any age group!

If you would like a chance to win a copy of the book, just e-mail me at jbrown@detnews.com and tell me how this book might help you in teaching a youngster how to knit. Please put the words "jelly yarn" in the subject line, and remember to include your name and address.

Good luck!
