olympics

Who wants the Olympics? Who wants to pay the immense costs for many sports that we do not care about? The expenditure would be better spent on libraries, museums and the arts- or a token reduction in the deficit. Brazil is the "winner". Brazil is a country that pleads poverty rather then making reasonable payments for the intellectual capital behind drugs and yet will spend huge amounts of money for the Olympic show.

Agreed. Sports are pretty much out of control.

On the smaller scale, I think colleges and universities should ban recruiting for sports teams. Using walk-ons -- people who actually go to college for an education -- would be true amateur sport.

krugman

Years back some economists talked about positive economics. Sort of a separation between opinion and analysis. Krugman in the popular press certainly does not practice positive economics. His rants all stem from his personal views from his global welfare perspective. Americans and citizens of foreign lands are of equal concern. He believes that there are very poor people in Hatti and they should be allowed to come (or stay if they can first find a way here). He sees that there are poor in this country that would be better off if given health insurance. All else but his personal views are secondary. It would be better if Krugman signed a different name to his columns - thus not soiling a record as a competent trade economist.

Threading in forums

We are working on adding threading to the forums. Clicking on the headline of a post will now get you related posts in a few different ways.

- If the post was sent to us in response to an article, clicking on that post's headline will retrieve all comments on that article, and clicking on the "See related article" link will send you to the article itself.

- If the comment was submitted in response to a cybersurvey, clicking on the headline will take you to the cybersurvey and its related comments.

- If you click on the headline of a forum post that was simply posted in the forum, you will get all posts with that same headline.

If you want to add a comment to a thread in the forum, use the same headline as the post to which you want to respond.

If you find a problem, please tell us, and thanks in advance for your patience as we work to improve the forums for you.
