Michigan linebacker Kevin Leach intercepted Joey Elliott with just more than two minutes left in the first quarter.
It was the Wolverines' first interception since the Michigan State game on Oct. 3, and their first turnover gained in four games.
Purdue had reached the Michigan 38-yard line when Elliott threw the interception. The Wolverines began their drive off the turnover at the U-M 27-yard line.
