Fuel economy on the fly

Oak Ridge National Laboratory has the answer for those who need miles per gallon numbers in the palm of their hand.

National Transportation Research Center located at the federal lab today launched fueleconomy.gov/m. The mobile website is specially designed to work on cell phones and PDAs, and it provides fuel economy estimates for all cars and light trucks sold in the U.S. back to model year 1985.

The site might prove handy for gas-conscious shoppers who want to crunch MPG numbers as they move between dealer lots.

The site also provides estimates of annual fuel cost, annual petroleum use and the vehicle's carbon footprint.
