Thoughts on Eminem's "3 a.m." video

Here's Eminem's blood-splattered new video for "3 a.m.," which premiered at 10 p.m. on Cinemax on Saturday:

Thoughts:

1. Wow, Eminem is ripped. These days are a distant memory.

2. The song's verses feature the most complex wordplay of any of the "Relapse" material that's been heard so far, but the chorus needed another revision before going to print. There's something about that "It's 3 a.m. in the morning" line that bugs me to no end. It's either 3 a.m. or it's 3 in the morning, it doesn't need to be both. And the chorus seems overly wordy when the only thing being said is, basically, "it's late at night and I killed some people. I think." Why not just say that?

3. It's too bad Em had that horrible feud with the Insane Clown Posse, because they would have made a great cameo in this song or in the video. The material is right up their alley.

4. While the rhymes are impressive -- especially in the second verse, where Em manages to rhyme "mannequin" with "man again," as well as "hallucinogens" and "hooligans" -- the subject matter will doom this single's commercial prospects. The song is currently No. 12 at the iTunes Music Store, behind even "We Made You," which has been available for several weeks.

5. I'm loving everything Team Eminem has done with Popsomp Hills (where the video is set) and Em's Twitter feed. They've created an immersive, interactive and wholly 21st century experience and have done a good job building excitement for "Relapse."

6. Can Team Em really keep "Relapse" from leaking? They've done a good job so far, but it's gotta leak soon, right?

Eminem; 3 A.M., and ICP

Eminem is very talented, nobody with a brain who can hear would ever dispute that fact. However, there are SEVERAL tracks on RELAPSE that are HEAVILY influenced by PSYCHOPATHIC RECORDS, ICP & TWIZTID. He may pretend not to see it, but the facts are there. ICP has a song from YEARS ago that is eeirly similar to "3AM". The video for that song is totally a knockoff of several recent Psychopathic Records artists' videos. Em, you are mad talented, but please don't try to act like you are totally unaware or not influenced by Psychopathic. Check out the videos, music...the facts are right there, and Psychopathic did it all years before Em. The hatchet chopping was ICP's thing, and now Eminem is doing it and acting like he didn't get it from them. He used to go to their shows in Detroit, he KNOWS what they are about. And apparently, he likes it.
